The other side of Ibiza: The Crankstart Internship with Meet the Sea in 2026

When people hear the word Ibiza, a very specific image often comes to mind: nightlife, music, and summer excess. Yet beyond this familiar narrative lies another Ibiza: quieter, deeper, and infinitely more enduring. It is an island shaped by the sea, defined by biodiversity, and sustained by a relationship between humans and the marine environment that stretches back centuries.

At Meet the Sea, this “other side of Ibiza” is not an alternative story, it is the foundation of everything we do.

The Sea as a Classroom

Founded in 2020, Meet the Sea was created with a simple but ambitious objective: to strengthen the role oceans must play in modern education. Operating from Ibiza, Spain, we design and deliver boat trips and school Sea Trips that combine sea education, physical activity, and emotional engagement. Our work is guided by the belief that meaningful learning happens when theory meets experience, when knowledge is felt as much as it is understood.

Each summer, our Family Boat Trip welcomes families from around the world into a living classroom at sea. Through live presentations on marine biodiversity and safety, guided snorkelling tours, and direct interaction with the marine environment, children and adults alike are invited to reconnect with the ocean. Over 11,000 passengers have taken part in this experience, and their reflections consistently point to personal growth, a renewed sense of environmental responsibility, and a rare balance between learning and joy.

It is from this philosophy that our school sea trips and corporate sea retreats have also emerged—programmes designed around the same three pillars: education, sports, and entertainment at sea.

Why Ibiza and the Sea Matter

Ibiza’s waters are home to extraordinary biodiversity, from Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows—recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site—to diverse fish species, invertebrates, and fragile coastal ecosystems. These waters do more than support life; they offer an ideal setting to explore questions of sustainability, human psychology, environmental stewardship, and well-being.

Working daily at sea reveals something essential: many fears, assumptions, and disconnections dissolve once people enter the water. Children who are initially anxious become confident explorers. Adults rediscover curiosity. The sea, when approached with respect and knowledge, becomes both a teacher and a catalyst for change.

A Shared Vision with Oxford University

It is precisely this educational potential that led to our collaboration with Oxford University’s Crankstart Internship Programme. We are proud to have had our 2026 internship proposal reviewed and approved by Ampon Pattaratanmanont, and to take part in a programme that actively supports students from widening participation backgrounds.

The Crankstart Internship reflects values closely aligned with our own: access to opportunity, experiential learning, and education that extends beyond traditional classroom walls.

The Crankstart Internship at Meet the Sea

During the summer of 2026, we will welcome two Crankstart interns for an eight-week placement running from 6 July to 28 August. The internship is immersive, hands-on, and deeply connected to the realities of working at sea.

Interns will take part in:

  • Daily Family Boat Trips, contributing to live educational presentations, leading guided snorkelling tours, and supporting families throughout the experience.
  • Content creation and communication, producing social media output across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and our blog, including underwater photography, testimonials, and storytelling rooted in real experiences.
  • Strategic development for our school sea trips and corporate sea retreats, helping shape how sea education is communicated to schools and organisations internationally.
This is not an observational role. It requires engagement, responsibility, and reflection.

Who Thrives in This Environment

The ideal intern is not defined by a specific academic discipline. Rather, they are someone who:

  • Enjoys working with families and children, understanding the emotional importance of meaningful holiday experiences.
  • Loves the sea: not abstractly, but practically, through snorkelling, swimming, and sharing that passion with others.
  • Is patient, reflective, and attuned to human psychology, particularly in group settings.
  • Communicates clearly and confidently, both in person and through digital media.
  • In return, interns gain something difficult to quantify: the experience of contributing to an educational model where the sea is not a backdrop, but the core subject.

Beyond the Internship

The Crankstart Internship with Meet the Sea is not about Ibiza as a destination. It is about Ibiza as a context: a place where marine biodiversity, education, and human connection intersect. It offers students the opportunity to question how we teach, how we learn, and how environments shape values.

In a world facing growing ecological and social challenges, placing the ocean back at the centre of education is no longer optional. It is essential.

This is the other side of Ibiza.
And this is the side we are proud to share.
